Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. If you enjoy outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, winter sports and lake country then this is an area you will love to live and work in.
Applicants who reside in Northwestern Ontario and have experience working in a cross-cultural environment, coupled with knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to those living in the Northwest Ontario, are assets. About The Role
Schedule: 4 day in / 3 days off - 10 hours per day.
Location : Rainy River, located 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario. This is a residential role. Camp & Travel Available (within a 350kms radius of the mine site ) or Relocation Available.
Position Reports To: General Manager
Position Overview
This is a pivotal role in ensuring the Rainy River Project mine site is a safe and healthy workplace. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing mine site safety systems, procedures, and providing assistance to all departments regarding; the development and implementation of safety programs; first aid matters; the evaluation of mine site conditions and the determination of actions; as well as the liaison with mine site contractor safety personnel, ensuring consistent safety standards are adhered to.

- Ensures Rainy River is in full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and all other applicable legislation;
- Ensures Rainy River safety system is aligned with Company standards, requirements and key performance indicator targets;
- Develops, Implements, and Coordinates the Rainy River Project Site emergency response, mine rescue, & firefighting programs
- Works with Corporate representative and other H/S Managers to enhance company safety performance and reputation;
- Develops measurement tools to assess the effectiveness of the safety system;
- Facilitates the communication of safety risks and safe practices to management, employees and contractors;
- Controls hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee practices through site visits, safety plans, and education of all supervisory personnel;
- Reviews documentation to ensure all required onsite records and reports are complete, accurate and submitted, as per established procedures and standards;
- Reinforces safety awareness in a manner that promotes cooperation and fosters a culture of resilience:
- Creates a working atmosphere that promotes openness and a high level of enthusiasm and morale in the field;
- Conducts work area inspections, audits and assists with incident investigations, writes job specific safety plans, schedules jobsite visits, and conducts risk assessment reviews;
- Develops, implements and assists with contractor and employee orientation and training programs;
- Provides oversight and guidance to Industrial Hygienist and applicable programs.
- Oversees and provides guidance to the Safety Training Department
- Oversees and provides guidance to the site medical services clinic and Nurse practitioners
- Other related duties to support the team as required to ensure the Rainy River Project is a success.
Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:
- Qualified candidates have 10+ years of Health and Safety experience
- The successful candidate will have a Health and Safety Diploma or related education, and/or related experience in construction, operations and safety;
- Must have industrial and / or construction experience in a dedicated health & safety role.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the mining sector related to open pit, underground mining processing and construction activities.
- Possess or be interested in acquiring a Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation or equivalent;
- Knowledge of Emergency Response, mine rescue, &/or firefighting would be considered an asset
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene issues and regulations such as air quality monitoring, radiation, noise, ergonomics, toxic substances, & medical surveillance programs etc.
- Must have in depth knowledge of health & safety techniques & technologies such as equipment lockout, confined spaces, fall arrest systems, personal protective equipment, machine guarding, accident investigations etc.
- Establishing and maintaining respectful working relationships with other management, employees, contractors, the general public and First Nations.
- Have the ability to work under pressure while meeting strict deadlines.
- Proficient and competent with regard to Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and all other relevant legislation;
- Have strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
- Have knowledge and experience related to budgetary development, monitoring and forecasting
- Have strong ability to develop short- and long-term business plans
- Have knowledge in Injury Management, early intervention workers compensation reporting practices
