Job Description
The System Administrator’s role is to manage and evolve the IT infrastructure and application environment to achieve high availability and performance of the various business applications supported. This individual also participates in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure provisioning of computing services, support, and maintenance that is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning
- Participate in and support capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for end-user computing, databases, O365-based messaging, and collaboration solutions in conjunction with end-users and department managers.
- Create and maintain documentation as it relates to workstation and server builds, virtual environments, and disaster recovery procedures.
- Develop and keep current technology roadmaps for all systems required to operate a modern, optimized computing network.
Acquisition & Deployment
- Coordinate with network engineering, business application, and database administration functions to implement workstation, server, and Email systems that utilize industry best practices to meet enterprise objectives.
- Install, configure, and initiate servers, software, and any required equipment to deploy and support all computing services.
- Conduct research and interface with vendors and industry peers to remain abreast of developments and trends within computing technology
Operational Management
- Perform all tasks necessary to support, maintain and implement hardware and software solutions for provisioning of end-user computing services.
- Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of end user workstation hardware, software, and peripheral devices.
- Manage servers, including database, e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated operating systems and software.
- Recommend, schedule, and perform software patches, upgrades, and/or purchases to maintain currency and ensure security.
- Ensure reliability of core application services through monitoring, support, and troubleshooting.
- Remain informed on laws, trends, and issues, including current and emerging technologies and best practices related to computing network management.
- Complete server build and infrastructure changes to provide the necessary network resource capacity for business needs.
- Implement and maintain high availability, backups and operational disaster recovery solutions.
- Implement policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure network security through secure access, monitoring, control, and routine security evaluations.
- Support application development teams and software migrations to new versions or new platforms.
- Create required reports in response to business needs.
- Ensure O365-based messaging and collaboration availability and security; including those involving user accounts, shared folders/calendars, mailing lists, and Outlook Web Access.
- Manage O365, antivirus applications, messaging filtering, and error log tracking.
- Ensure that server implementations comply with policies, standards, licensing agreements, and configuration guidelines.
- Perform message archiving, retrieval, and deletion according to best-practices for maintaining regulatory compliance.
- Anticipate, mitigate, identify, respond to, and resolve problems affecting messaging systems performance, efficiency, and availability.
- Monitor, test, and analyze e-mail system and server software activities to ensure maximum performance, efficiency, and availability.
- Assess need for any messaging system reconfigurations (minor or significant) and execute them if required.
- Develop, implement, document, and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for messaging system administration and appropriate use.
- Adhere to service desk, incident management, and change management procedures (Service Now).
- Manage and report time accurately as per assignments and job requirements.
Qualifications
Education Required
- Four-year university degree or college diploma in computer related field or equivalent practical experience.
- ITIL v3 Foundation training.
- Certification in prevalent network technologies (Microsoft, etc.).
Work Experience
- Required: 5+ years’ experience managing IT systems for a large network environment.
Knowledge And Experience Required
- Proven experience with network capacity planning, network security principles, and general network management best practices.
- Demonstrated hardware troubleshooting and application support experience.
- Solid, hands-on technical knowledge of network and Windows 10/11 operating systems.
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016, 2019/2022 operating systems.
- Strong working knowledge of patch management and change control practices.
- Technical working knowledge of administrative, management and auditing tools (AD/Entra, Netwrix, ServiceNow, Rapid7, Zscaler)
- Extensive experience with Active Directory, IIS and .NET application architecture.
- Technical working knowledge of Mobile Device Management systems such as Microsoft InTune.
- Experience in deploying and managing both iOS and Android devices in an enterprise environment.
- Working technical knowledge of current messaging and collaboration systems software, protocols, and standards, including Microsoft O365, SharePoint and Teams.
- Proven experience with Microsoft Exchange administration
- Knowledge of industry best practices for e-mail privacy and regulatory compliance, routing, filtering, monitoring
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server database management.
- Experience with high-availability design (failover systems and data replication).
- Previous exposure to server virtualization technologies such as VMWare.
- Ability to configure networked printing and imaging devices
- Ability to troubleshoot workstation software issues
- Experience with workstation deployment/imaging.
- Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
- Exceptional technical documentation skills
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
