The open-pit gold mine is a joint venture between IAMGOLD and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. and is operated by IAMGOLD. We are located near Gogama, Ontario, with access to stable infrastructure and strong connections with our local communities.

Welder
The Welder will be responsible for performing welding and fabrication tasks to maintain, repair, and modify mobile mining equipment, ensuring safety, reliability, and operational efficiency. Working closely with the maintenance team, this role supports continuous improvement in asset performance while adhering to safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Area 1:
Equipment Maintenance & Welding Repairs
- Proficient in welding repairs for diverse industrial machinery, including milling equipment, crushers, and conveyors, and skilled in shop fabrication.
- Expertise in custom metal fabrication and installation for equipment enhancements and structural reinforcement.
- Ability to perform detailed equipment inspections to detect and rectify structural defects and wear.
- Comprehensive knowledge of various welding techniques, including SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, and oxy-acetylene cutting.
- Specialized skills in repairing high-wear industrial components, such as chutes, transition zones, and piping systems.
- Commitment to delivering welding work that consistently meets company and OEM quality standards.
- Capable of executing field welding repairs while strictly adhering to safety and quality protocols.
Area 2
Health & Safety Compliance
- Strictly comply with all company safety protocols, mining regulations, and government mandates.
- Implement and adhere to proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, consistently maintaining a secure work environment.
- Proactively identify and report safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and potential risks to supervisory personnel.
- Consistently utilize and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and practice safe work procedures.
- Perform thorough equipment cleaning, removing grease and debris to mitigate fire risks before welding.
- Ensure the safe handling of welding materials, adhering to all environmental and safety standards.
Area 3
Operational Excellence
- Deliver high-quality welding and fabrication to minimize equipment downtime and adhere to maintenance schedules.
- Proactively identify and document welding repair needs through detailed Work Requests (WRs) for efficient planning and execution.
- Continuously evaluate and refine welding techniques to improve equipment durability and reliability.
- Maintain meticulous records of welding activities, inspections, and completed repairs for accurate tracking and reporting.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Actively pursue opportunities to enhance welding skills and expertise.
Area 4
Work Collaboratively with Others to Deliver Operational Reliability
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to optimize workflow and prioritize repairs effectively.
- Provide welding expertise through mentoring and supporting team members in best practices and problem-solving.
- Assist Millwrights in diagnosing and resolving structural and mechanical equipment failures.
- Support Millwrights and the Mill Maintenance team with daily tasks and operations.
- Cultivate a positive and collaborative work environment to enhance team performance and operational efficiency.
Safety & Sustainability Expectations

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity
- Executes critical welding and fabrication on milling equipment, ensuring safety and reliability with minimal supervision.
- Repairs structural and mechanical failures with precision, problem-solving skills, and adherence to industry standards.
- Manages multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, adapting to changing priorities while collaborating with Mill Maintenance to optimize equipment performance.
Job Qualifications
Qualifications & Skill Requirements
Minimum Qualifications, Formal Education, Certifications Or Equivalents
- Trades Certificate or equivalent provincial certification (CWB preferred).
- Equivalent Technical Experience will be considered as well.
- Apprentices may be considered in accordance with business and legislative requirements.
Work Experience – Nature & Length
minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
- Previous experience in open pit mining or mineral processing (specifically gold processing) is considered an asset.
Additional Qualifications – Competency Requirements
- Proficiency in reading blueprints, schematics, and welding symbols.
- Experience with high-pressure welding and structural fabrication.
- Ability to weld in various positions (vertical, horizontal, overhead).
- Familiarity with working at heights and in confined spaces.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and ability to work in a remote mining environment.
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Working Environment
This a hands-on position with the majority of the time being spent in the field, with an exposure to the elements.
