The Geology Summer Student will assist the exploration team by completing assigned field and technical tasks to ensure the successful execution of exploration projects. The Geology Summer Student will work in a team environment and must always promote and demonstrate the IAMGOLD Company Values. This position requires outdoor work on a regular basis in a variety of weather conditions and the student must carry out regular hazard reviews and conduct work in accord with our safety practices. The person will learn important mineral exploration techniques in an Archean geological environment within the Abitibi Subprovince and will benefit from a teamwork environment.
Provide geological field support to the exploration geology team and exploration programs in the field, in the core shack or other locations. Duties will include (but are not limited to) geological mapping, prospecting, and rock sample collection, and geochemical sampling.
- Be prepared for traversing at the start of each day and assist the supervising Geologist in field preparations and planning of the day.
- Ensure FLRA are completed daily as well as vehicle circle checks and all required equipment checks.
Complete field sampling of outcrops including chip – channel sampling with rock hammers and portable rock saws. Complete geological descriptions of samples when needed.
- Review rock saws and related equipment to ensure it is in good working order the day before the planned channel sampling. Make sure that previous training on the equipment is completed before using. Report any equipment issues to the supervising Geologist.
- Make sure that all the correct PPE are available and are being used. Take all precautions to work safely and to protect the environment. Make sure spill kits are available for use.
Assist in geological work as part of diamond drilling programs when requested including drill core geotechnical measurements, S.G. measurements, and moving of drill core.
- Participation in core shack technician activities, to assist geologist and technician.
- Participation in field activities related to drilling to assist the geologists including drill hole spotting, drill site inspections, drill trail inspections, and other related tasks.
- May be asked to participate in other projects of the company.
Job Qualifications
- Registration in a geology / geological engineering program at University or College.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Previous summer student experience in mineral exploration is an asset, however not a requirement.
- Previous geological work as a summer student will be beneficial.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
- Ability to work well in a team.
- Must be in good health and able to complete the required physical tasks in an outdoor environment.
- Must have a sense of urgency and focus.
- Computer skills (Microsoft Office, GIS: ArcGIS) will be beneficial to the job.
