Miner BHP could start its multi-billion dollar investment plan to upgrade its Escondida mine in Chile as soon as this year, Escondida president Alejandro Tapia said on Tuesday.
BHP requested initial permits in February as part of a larger plan to maximize production at Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine, through an investment of up to $14.7 billion over about 10 years.
“We’re ready to start carrying it out even this year if the necessary permits are approved,” Tapia said in a statement.
