About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
Lead a team of regional shutdown planners and site based schedulers to deliver safe, efficient, and value‑focused shutdown plans and schedules. Ensure all activities align with the Shutdown Management Framework, operational priorities, and broader business objectives.
Essential Duties
- Manage fixed plant shutdown readiness and planning activities, ensuring compliance with safety, schedule, and budget requirements.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams including HSE, maintenance, engineering, production, and procurement to ensure all aspects of the shutdown are considered.
- Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to minimise disruptions and ensure safe, efficient shutdown execution.
- Lead and mentor teams responsible for short- and long-term shutdown planning and scheduling.
- Provide planning support during shutdown execution to ensure smooth delivery and timely issue resolution.
- Lead shutdown readiness reviews and provide clear recommendations to support go/no-go decisions at key milestones.
- Monitor and report shutdown planning and execution performance, including schedule adherence, cost drivers, and key metrics.
- Maintain the Major Events Calendar, ensuring shutdown strategies are aligned with risk-based decision-making to support business objectives.
- Champion shutdown management best practices in accordance with corporate standards and governance frameworks.
- Drive continuous improvement by identifying and implementing enhancements within the Shutdown Management Framework.
- Ensure lessons learned workshops and shutdown close-out reports are completed and documented.
- Leverages AI-enabled analytics and decision-support tools to interrogate large and complex planning, scheduling, and execution datasets, improving the speed, accuracy, and consistency of problem identification.
Training & Experience
- Operates effectively within established systems, processes, and governance frameworks to resolve planning and execution challenges.
- Analyses data generated from planning and execution processes, comparing outcomes against known models, standards, and benchmarks.
- Anticipates how work will be executed in the field, even where direct, physical or real-time feedback is limited. Solves problems where trial-and-error approaches are insufficient, applying structured analysis, scenario evaluation, and alternative problem-solving techniques.
- Identifies patterns and trends across shutdowns to forecast impacts, risks, and likely outcomes. Continuously improves work methods by validating diagnoses using multiple data sources and recognising when outcomes may be driven by alternative or emerging patterns.
- Strong understanding of shutdown lifecycle management for maintenance and capital work. Practical experience planning and coordinating large, multi-discipline shutdowns involving internal teams and contractors.
- Knowledge of structured shutdown management frameworks, governance requirements, and readiness processes. Understanding of planning methodologies, critical path management, and resource optimisation. Awareness of safety, operational risk, and compliance considerations relevant to shutdown delivery.
- Prior experience as a shutdown planner or scheduler is essential and underpins effective leadership in this role. Advanced proficiency in maintenance and shutdown planning and scheduling tools, systems, and methodologies. Strong capability in applying shutdown management frameworks, readiness assessments, and close-out processes.
- Working knowledge of performance monitoring, cost forecasting, and budget control to support informed decision-making. Practical understanding of risk identification, mitigation, and change control within shutdown environments. High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for analysis, reporting, and executive-level communication
