Kumba Iron Ore
We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.
Job Description
As an
Executive Head of Technical & Strategy, your responsibilities will include:
- Leveraging advanced industry knowledge and experience of best practices to establish a solid foundation of embedded safety in the mining discipline that is aligned with Anglo American and industry standards.
- Setting performance targets in line with business expectations and approving production and service strategies, such as OMS and EMS.
- Overseeing the operational value chain, identifying and managing threats and opportunities.
- Overseeing the Sustainable Mine Plan (SMP) for the operations.
- Integrating Anglo American’s approach to sustainability and social performance as relevant to the discipline, to improve sustainability performance over time.
- Developing and leading the strategy for Kumba.
- Identifying and cultivating new business opportunities.
- Managing and overseeing interfaces between strategy and business development for potential opportunities.
- Providing expert recommendations for strategic initiatives and areas under consideration.
- Facilitating capital decisions.
- Supporting the overall management and corporate decision-making process to maximise short-, medium-, and long-term profitability and shareholder returns.
- Developing, reviewing, and reporting on the business development strategy, ensuring the strategic objectives are well understood and executed by the heads of departments.
- Developing and executing technology strategies to optimise processes and drive value.
- Defining and implementing a cohesive strategy for the portfolio of disciplines, ensuring alignment with the Anglo American approach.
- Monitoring and reporting on the strategic value-add of Group Technical Services while informing relevant stakeholders of the service portfolio.
- Providing support for Group initiatives such as asset optimisation.
- Providing strategic direction and guiding overall internal technical services required by the business.
- Ensuring accountability to the CEO of Kumba Iron Ore for all concept studies and smoothly overseeing the transition of projects from concept to operations.
- Ensuring customer satisfaction by providing support, advice, and oversight for operational excellence.
- Leading project teams by identifying, implementing, and providing technical advice, support, and reviews.
- Consulting with operations to understand essential specialist requirements and driving the annual demand planning process.
- Providing technical services and consulting expertise (governance, assurance, operations standards, guidance).
- Managing and ensuring appropriate stakeholder relationships supporting strategic initiatives within and outside Kumba Iron Ore.
- Establishing routines and information requirements for reporting performance to the Board, Exco, Bulks Exco, AA, and other shareholders.
- Establishing a purpose-led, high-performing culture of excellence that cultivates inclusivity and diversity and createing a highly skilled and experienced technical team that enables mine and business performance.
- Takes a proactive approach to guarantee compatibility between external and internal requirements, establishing appropriate governance protocols, delegating accountabilities, conducting thorough investigations into incidents, and continually monitor rehabilitation activities within the specific discipline.
This role is in the Technical and Strategy (T&S) discipline at a Band 4 level (E4/E5 Grade) reporting to the Kumba Iron Ore CEO.
Qualifications
- Technical Degree
- A relevant postgraduate business qualification (CA, CFA, Technical, Actuarial or MBA)
- Valid SA Drivers licence
Technical Knowledge
- Mining industry and related legislation (Mining Charter, Mine Health & Safety Act, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act).
- Advanced knowledge of mining operations and experience in the successful strategic management of a sizeable sub-functional team.
- Advanced knowledge of business development and strategy management.
