The role – what you’ll do
Barr is seeking an intern to support our environmental management team in Calgary for the 2026 summer season. We are a dynamic consulting company with clients ranging from municipalities to the oil sands. Our structure and culture provide a great introduction to consulting in the environmental and engineering fields.
This internship will include a variety of fieldwork and office-based tasks, providing you with a holistic view of the environmental consulting business while you work alongside our diverse team of engineers and scientists.
A successful candidate for this position enjoys problem solving, is detail oriented, and is self-motivated. They enjoy working on teams and independently. They have a flexible work style and a willingness to modify their schedules as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs.
This person will be scheduled to work full-time, and the internship is expected to last three to four months over the 2026 summer fieldwork season. Overtime is not unusual. This internship is eligible for any provincially mandated vacation pay in accordance with labour law requirements.

Your impact – key responsibilities
Fieldwork: support environmental sampling programs (soil, surface water, groundwater, air), air emissions monitoring, and climate station maintenance and support.
Collaboration: build and maintain strong internal relationships and support client engagement while completing tasks before, during, and after the field session.
Reporting support: assist with data management and evaluate emissions and air-quality data; review regulations and facility information relevant to projects; assist in the preparation of reports. such as writing technical evaluations or preparing data summary tables and spreadsheets.
About the opportunity
Timeline: this internship opportunity runs for approximately three to four months, starting in May or June of 2026. Start and end dates are flexible to accommodate class schedules, finals, and holidays.
Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position will be based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, office.
Travel expectation: approximately 60–70 percent fieldwork, ability to travel up to two weeks at a time; field session length may vary based on project needs.
Work environment: some of the project work may require work on locations with rough terrain typical of construction sites, operating industrial facilities, remote locations, and potentially working on tall structures and near industrial equipment. In addition, some of the project work may require entering and working on sites containing hazardous substances and/or the use of respiratory equipment. Safety training and drug testing will be required prior to being given work assignments on these sites. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
About you – required core competencies
Education: university enrollment with a major in chemical, mechanical, or environmental engineering; environmental science; or a related scientific discipline.
Completion of six courses in engineering, environmental sciences, or related subjects.
GPA of 3.2/4.0 or higher.
Ongoing enrollment in one of the programs listed above, with at least one semester to go after the internship.
Availability: availability to work for three to four months during the summer in 2026.
Travel: ability to travel to locations for up to two weeks at a time.
Software: familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and cultural resource databases.
Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
Helpful additional experience (not required)
Compensation: Anticipated range of $29.00–$33.50 per hour. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.
