Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. Located in South America, Suriname was originally settled as a Dutch colony, is very culturally diverse and enjoys a tropical climate. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.
Purpose
The Sampler 1 is responsible for the safe, efficient collection of representative samples in the mining production environment. Sampler 1 works closely on a daily basis with the Mine Geology and Drill & Blast teams to ensure the timely delivery of high quality samples, aligned to production, mining plans and mining inventory requirements.
The Sampler 1 is responsible specifically for the collection of representative samples used in Ore Control, Nearmine and inpit drilling and other sampling regimes as required. Samples include blasthole, reverse circulation, field, trench, auger and other sample types as required.
The Sampler 1 possesses 24 hr. vision, with a thorough understanding how their role and actions impact sampling team performance over the current and following shift.
The Sampler 1 reports to the Ore Definition supervisor and has no direct reports.
Essential Duties
Execution
- Demonstrate willingness to learn to use/operate varied instruments, machines or equipment to complete field services activities including but not limited to light vehicles and field analytical equipment.
- Works under direction.
Production Sampling
- Self-manage all sampling resources required for daily tasks.
- Ensure the collection of representative samples in accordance to QAQC requirements as required by the Mine Geology Department
- Work closely with the Drill & Blast team to ensure safe and effective blasthole sample collection, demonstrating good situational awareness, particularly when working close to HME and drills.
- Assist with pickup and dispatch of samples as required.
- Assist with Drill & Blast activities as required.
- Work according to the QAQC program as designed by the Mine Geology department
- Demonstrate understanding and competence in fundamental QAQC concepts including but not limited to: collection of representative samples according to procedure and chain of custody practices.
Training & Experience
Knowledge:
- Secondary School Certificate
- Surinamese Drivers License (BE)
- Strong desire and ability to learn technical concepts.
- Demonstrable understanding of the importance of adherence to technical procedures and tasks
Experience:
- 1+ years in open pit mine and exploration preferred
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to converse in Dutch or English at a moderate standard.
- Basic literacy
- Manual Handling
- Willingness to learn to use/operate varied instruments, machines or equipment to complete field services activities including but not limited to light vehicles and field analytical equipment.
- Able to read, understand and complete field forms (i.e. inspections, JHA, daily reports). Report to supervisor if field parameters are outside normal range or trend.
