Newmont’s Merian operation in Suriname is an open pit gold mine approximately 66km south of the town Moengo and 30 km north of the Nassau Mountains near the French Guiana. Newmont owns a 75 percent interest in the limited partnership and Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., Suriname’s state-owned oil company, owns the remaining 25 percent interest.

Your Impact
Leading step change in connecting multiple levels of cross department and cross functional interfaces to support the operational excellence and continuous improvement of Merian. Support the integration of mine planning, geotechnical, and operational data to enable data-driven decisions and efficient execution of the mining plan.
As Part of Our Team You Will
- Coach and train mine engineers to generate pit and phase designs through pit limit and pit shells analysis, and in mine planning and drilling and blasting best practices.
- Review designs and identify improvement opportunities
- Coach and provide guidance to medium term mine planning engineers to develop quarterly forecast, Business Plan assumptions and mining schedules, focused on the 2year planning horizon.
- Lead and manage weekly and monthly plan processes.
- Analyze various strategic scenarios and communicating plan improvement opportunities.
- Review and improve mine planning process for the mine engineering team.
- Design and implement mine engineering technical training programs for mine engineering team.
- Develop and deliver solutions for Mine Technical Services
Prerequisites for your success in this role
- Considering the advisory aspect of the role, the candidate should have formal education qualifications in Mining Engineering or related fields and subject matter expertise across all facets of technical services, including mine planning, geotechnical risk management, geology, and other technical disciplines.
- Demonstrated Relevant technical experience required to establish new governance, procedures, and processes to improve the effectiveness of the Technical Services team.
- Ensure compliance of existing processes with Newmont standards and industry best practices.
- The role also requires a solid understanding of mine planning principles, operational data integration, and the application of digital tools to support decision-making and operational forecasting
- The Advisor must demonstrate strong technical proficiency in mine planning and scheduling for both medium- and short-term horizons.
- Advanced user skills in MinePlan Software (MineSight) required, including the ability to generate, validate, and optimize mining sequences and pit designs aligned with production objectives and geotechnical constraints.
- Advanced English (spoken and written), Dutch preferred, and a driver's license
- Mine site experience
Prerequisites for your success in this role
- Deliver guidance on standard methodologies to Mine Technical Services
- Develop and manage protocols for the testing and validation of integrated systems, ensuring they meet operational and design specifications
- Support technical staff in developing tools for improved communication and ensuring business plan objectives are met.
- Support the planning and integration of a very complex operation as it adopts future technologies and mining methods
- Assess operational data for continuous improvement
- Liaise with other departments to ensure integration of technical solutions
- Report on compliance with technical standards and regulations
- Responsible for identifying risks and developing risk mitigation measures, and monitoring procedures
Your Work Environment
- This position is located at Merian, project sites.
- Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment under a rotational roster (6 weeks on site and 3 weeks off) with additional work time as required to meet operational commitments.
- The Merian mine is located in Northeastern Suriname, approximately 98 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Paramaribo and 60 kilometers south of Moengo.
- Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace.
- Suriname has a tropical climate with dry and two rainy seasons, with anticipated tropical rainfall of 1.5m to 2.5m of rain per year
