Community Relations Specialist

Young-Davidson is a low-cost, long-life operation and one of Canada’s largest underground gold mines. It is located near the town of Matachewan centrally located between Timmins, Kirkland Lake, North Bay and Sudbury, Ontario. The 2020 completion of a highly automated, lower mine expansion has resulted in Young-Davidson increasing production and generating strong free cash flow. With a large Mineral Reserve base, it will serve as Alamos’ foundation for growth for many years to come. Initially reporting to the General Manager, the successful candidate will take on a unique specialist role that blends community engagement, environmental stewardship, and partnership building. You will be involved in the development and execution of strategies that ensure Young-Davidson Mine maintains strong communication ties with local communities and our First Nation partners.
Primary Responsibilities
Community Relations:
- Provides strategic advice to the General Manager and Heads of Department to identify communication issues, risks, and opportunities;
- Creates strategies, programs, and activities to make positive contributions within the communities to support local health, education, business development, and infrastructure development;
- Proactively fosters, develops, and maintains appropriate and effective relationships with local and regional businesses, institutions, community groups, the media and other external organizations and stakeholders;
- Supports and/or organizes events and prepare presentations and/or speaking notes for Senior Management’s public appearance in different communities;
- Develops and manages community and government contact databases, assessing information and action on it where necessary;
- Serves as the point of contact for community enquiries and coordinates engagement activities ensuring a two-way dialogue between the Corporation and its external partners;
- Represents and ensures visibility of Alamos Gold Inc. in public forums and events across the province including events organized by industry organizations;
- Manages day-to-day communication activities, and consistently coordinates responses to community relation issues, with a focus on quality and strategic timing;
- Works with leadership to conceptualize, design, and implement meaningful, creative engagement strategies to ensure citizens are aware of and contribute to conversations about significant public initiatives;
- Develops a strong understanding of departmental, divisional, and corporate goals and strategies, and ensures they are integrated into communications and outreach activities;
- Oversees Young-Davidson’s social media strategy. Develops social media best practice strategies to de-escalate issues;
- Manages escalated resident complaints/concerns arising from social media channels. Liaises with corporate communications to ensure issues or needs are identified and managed;
- Demonstrates Alamos Gold Inc.’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, transparency, and accountability;
- Assists with the preparation and development of Young-Davidson Mine’s community relations strategy to support the competitiveness of the mining industry and Alamos Gold’s business objectives; and
- Identifies and creates opportunities to raise Alamos Gold Inc. / Young-Davidson Mine’s profile with target audiences across Canada.
Environmental Relations
- Assists in the development, implementation and coordination of community and media relations, which includes preparing press releases, public service announcements, fact sheets, presentations, and related literature; and
- Serves as the liaison in dealing and meeting the with media, environmental and conservation groups, community groups, and the public that are affected by Young-Davidson Mine.
Indigenous Relations
- Ensures involvement with key Indigenous communities;
- Assists in building relationships that foster value, creating economic opportunities for Alamos Gold Inc. and its partners;
- Provides opportunities for continuous cultural learning and actively promote Indigenous peoples culture throughout the site;
- Provides leadership and guidance in the implementation and administration of the Community Benefit Agreements;
- Engages local First Nation Communities;
- Supports partnerships with Indigenous activities; and
- Collaborates with all departments of the operation in ensuring in ongoing dialogue in understanding the importance of our Indigenous relations and engagement.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications And Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or College Diploma obtained in a relevant sector; (Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Social Services, Political Science, Indigenous Engagement, etc.);
- 2-5 years of experience in Community Relations or equivalent (Required);
- Experience in mining or related industry (preferred);
- Experience Writing/Composing, Correspondence/Reports (required);
- Must be a self-starter with excellent editing, writing and research skills;
- Ability to balance multiple projects, meeting deadlines without sacrificing an eye for detail;
- Must have a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality;
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and to work as part of a team;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, Publisher, and basic photo and video editing software; and
- Must maintain confidentiality and be respectful of sensitive situations.
Schedule: 10-hour shifts on a 4/3 schedule.
