About the Role
As a key member of the Engineering Copper SA Small Projects Planning & Controls team, you will provide project and commercial expertise to manage contracts and contractor performance within the Small Projects portfolio. You will ensure alignment with BHP’s standards and performance targets across safety (HSE), cost, schedule, risk and quality
Success in this role requires strong stakeholder engagement, working closely with BHP teams, engineering consultants, and construction contractors to drive performance improvements. A core focus will be providing commercial and contract support throughout the project lifecycle through vendor performance data collection, management & analysis, strategic portfolio & program optimisation, and promotion of effective contractor management through knowledge transfer.
This position will be based in Adelaide, with occasional site travel.
In this role you will:
- Champion a safety-first culture and actively participate in BHP’s Field Leadership program.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks, using BHP’s risk management framework to drive safe and productive outcomes.
- Support contract owners in achieving & maintaining compliance with BHP’s Contractor Management Framework.
- Support the management of contractor performance through performance metrics, tracking, and reviews.
- Collect, manage, and analyse vendor performance data to drive data-based decision making.
- Develop and implement portfolio - project level commercial strategies and models (e.g., programs of work, strategic procurement).
- Develop contracting strategies and tender documents in alignment with portfolio - project value drivers, risks and contracting options minimising ambiguity and commercial risks.
- Support internal & external BHP stakeholders in the strategizing, sourcing, execution and management of new contracts or framework agreements in compliance with BHP standards and requirements.
- Apply sound commercial judgement in tender documentations, contractual terms and conditions to ensure that consultants and contractors perform their obligations under the contract while promoting and maintaining effective vendor relationships.
- Represent and champion Small Projects interests and requirements in Regional/Asset level procurement initiatives.
- Uplift the commercial acumen of Small Project Teams and Build strong, trusted relationships with BHP stakeholders, internal customers, contractors and suppliers.
About You

- Experience with a large portfolio of diverse multi-disciplined projects and demonstrated experience in developing commercial strategies and models to support project & portfolio outcomes.
- Proven experience in contract management of engineering consultants, construction contractors and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
- Understanding of mining processes & commercial drivers, applicable vendor markets, high-level multi-disciplinary engineering, and exposure to resources construction methodologies
- Good understanding of end-to-end project and program management principles (PMBOK or Prince2 qualifications helpful) including project controls, governance, and quality management.
- Collaborative mindset and highly capable in building constructive long-term relationships.
- Proven ability to operate effectively in complex and ambiguous environments.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a structured and disciplined approach.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to influence a diverse stakeholder group (frontline to executive) and transfer knowledge & skills to internal customers.
- Proficient in the MS Office Suite of products, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Power BI, MS Forms, etc.
- Proficient in use of common commercial, financial and project management platforms and systems (ex. Primavera, ProCore, SAP, etc)
- Good time management skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
