World’s first underwater nuclear explosion photos disclosed

A series of startling photos of the “world’s first underwater nuclear explosion,” conducted in 1946, have been published by PetaPixel.

In the exercise, called “Operation Crossroads,” the U.S. blasted a 23-kilotun nuke known as “Baker” 90 feet underwater at the Micronesian island of Bikini Atoll.

The explosion caused ocean water to reach over two miles high.

Nuclear tests continued until 1958.
