We will not consider wage demand, says Amplats CEO

Chris Griffith, CEO of Anglo American Platinum, said the company will not consider wage demands by the striking workers. “It will be irrational as it is outside any form of bargaining,” he said.

“We urge our workers to return to work and use recognized structures to present their demands,” Griffith said. He noted that the mine’s current agreement with unions end in June 2013.

“We will be re-negotiating wages in six months’ time,” Griffith said.

Griffith said the company will be forced to begin “disciplinary action tomorrow [Thursday] against any employees who remain on strike, and that action could lead to dismissal.”

The striking amplats workers are demanding a monthly wage of ZAR 16,000.
