Mexico’s proposed higher mining royalties could block nearly $7bn in investments
The Mexican government proposed raising mining royalties under the argument that metal prices have risen in recent years.
Village Main Reef Gold Mining Co. said today that workers at its Buffelsfontein gold mine launched an unprotected strike yesterday night.
Company CEO Marius Saaiman said, “None of the category four to eight employees forming part of the [National Union of Mineworkers] bargaining unit reported for work.”
Village Main Reef officials plan to enter talks with workers with view to resolve the matter.
