Thermo Fisher Scientific Embeds GPS Functionality in all Niton XL3t Series XRF Analyzers

LAS VEGAS – MINExpo International 2012 (September 24, 2012) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today introduced embedded GPS functionality in all Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t Series x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers. The new capability is designed to accelerate discovery by making it easier to capture the exact position of a sample at the same time geochemical analysis is performed. The Niton® XL3t Series XRF analyzers with embedded GPS are on display within the Thermo Scientific booth #949 at MINExpo, September 24-26, in Las Vegas.

“We’re constantly adding new innovations to our existing line of portable XRF analyzers to put even more necessary functionality in the hands of field personnel,” said Jon Culbertson, vertical market director of mining and exploration for Thermo Scientific Portable Analytical Instruments. “Combining precise location coordinates with geochemical analysis into a single process helps ensure data integrity and saves time, both important benefits for our customers in mineral exploration.”

With embedded GPS functionality in all Niton XL3t analyzers, Bluetooth* or wireless connectivity to third-party GPS instruments is no longer required. Analytical results and GPS coordinates are exported through the Thermo Scientific NDT Translator directly to a variety of commercially available GPS software packages for rapid creation of geochemical maps that are used to identify areas for infill sampling, drilling or more detailed investigation.

Today, more than 3,000 Thermo Scientific portable XRF analyzers are used across the global mining industry for mineral exploration, from gold and copper porphyry deposits to nickel laterites, rare earth and platinum group elements. Portable instruments are an integral part of next-generation mining, putting the power and precision of a laboratory instrument in the hands of field personnel to accelerate discovery and contribute to increased profitability.
