SGS is pleased to announce that Stephen Mackie, Ph.D. has been appointed as the new Group Manager of Hydrometallurgy in Lakefield, Canada. Stephen was previously in the role of Group Leader, Advanced Technologies, SGS Minerals Services.
Stephen graduated from Queen’s University with a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science with Honours (Subject of Specialization: Chemistry). Stephen joined SGS Canada Inc. in 2005 as a Senior Metallurgist and later assumed the role of Group Leader, Advanced Technologies.
In his new role, Stephen will provide leadership to the world-renowned hydrometallurgical team in Lakefield, ensuring operational targets and customer expectations are met and exceeded in a safe, timely and effective manner.
Stephen brings to SGS 13 years of experience in the minerals industry and 7 years in academia as an Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry. He is a recognized expert in process chemistry including atmospheric and pressure leaching, electrowinning, solvent extraction and metal precipitation, secondary refining and rheology.
Stephen is also the author of numerous publications in the fields of leaching process development, the recovery of high purity compounds, and hydrometallurgical process development. He has co-authored patents on the production of high purity lithium compounds.
