Nutrien getting head office tax break, province won’t disclose cost of subsidy

Only one senior Nutrien Ltd. executive lives in Saskatchewan, but the potash company could still be getting heavily subsidized for maintaining head office jobs in the province.

Despite being the only province with a potash industry, Saskatchewan subsidizes head-office jobs for potash companies. Deductions on potash profit taxes are offered at a rate of $25,000 per head, per year. For “new” corporate jobs, the incentive rises to $100,000 per year for five years.

It remains unclear how many head-office jobs at Nutrien are being counted towards the incentive, with a government official citing “confidential tax information” as the reason why.
