Mining: Not a man’s world anymore

ZAMBOANGA CITY (June 9, 2014) – In an industry dominated by men, Atro Mining-Vitali, Inc. (AMVI) has chosen to create a difference by opening its door to women.

This as the company wants to make sure that the employment opportunities brought about but its operation are equal and gender-sensitive, in consonance with the over-all corporate goals and objectives.

The testimony for this commitment is the presence of lady Engr. Florabel Rochelle R. Fabon, who works alongside with her male counterparts in AMVI’s mine site in Barangay Vitali here.

A licensed civil engineer, Fabon works in the engineering department particularly in formulating design and estimates, and project management.

“I am at home and comfortable working with the company,” said the lady engineer, who started her career at AMVI last year.

Fabon finished her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in Western Mindanao State University this city in 2006 and passed the licensure examinations for civil engineers in the same year.

“My knowledge on surveying lands, reading plans, project estimates and other applications in our University, which gave me valuable exposure to some Engineering Works, prepare me for my job with the company,” she said.

“I have also gained from my work experiences additional knowledge on mine design and estimate, map reading, test pits, surveys, computer works, civil design, and estimate as well as construction project management and supervision on both horizontal and vertical structures preferably roads, drainages, commercial buildings,” she added.

She said being a woman would not be a hindrance to her chosen career, adding that she considered it a challenge working alongside with men.

“My being flexible, fast learner, goal-oriented, willing to work under pressure and willing to be trained at any time are my assets,” she pointed out.

The company opens one of the much-needed employment opportunities for the people here. Muchmore, it created a total quality workforce and equal opportunities among women.
