Mineral development has less to do with mining than it does with heavy haul rail

At this year’s Heavy Haul Rail conference, Aurecon in-house experts Ken Devencorn and Alex Pey will discuss how mineral development has as much to do with heavy haul rail as it does mining.

Through their paper Ken and Alex will seek to provide an understanding of some of the challenges faced within the African context, and how lessons learned from Australian bulk materials handling, bulk ports, and heavy haul rail are collectively providing innovative solutions. Their paper also illustrates the significant financial benefit collaboration between miners can provide when developing a rail corridor to service a new coal basin.

The conference will focus on discussing opportunities for the rail sector on the back of the expected $112 billion infrastructure boom to support the coal and iron ore mining sectors within Australia.

“To capitalise on the demand for resources, mining houses are looking for the most efficient ways to increase their mine and port capacity. A perfectly matched combination of infrastructure and operations can help create this efficiency,” Ken Devencorn, Aurecon’s Rail Leader says.

With over 30 years of experience as a market leader delivering rail infrastructure design, Aurecon offers the complete range of design services across all phases of the rail project delivery chain. The organisation is also one of the world’s leading engineering and specialist consultancies on mining infrastructure and bulk material facilities and has an outstanding track record in ports and coastal design.

“An appreciation of the importance of evaluating the supply chain as a whole – not as separate parts – underpins our expertise and any solutions we offer,” adds Ken.
