As recognition of the important work 350,000 miners in the U.S. do every day, Graphic Products has produced the infographic 10 Deadliest Hazards for Miners, in time for the fourth annual Mine Rescue Day on October 30, 2016. The infographic breaks down hazards threatening miners including powered haulage, machinery, exploding vessels, slips and falls.
The infographic artfully underscores the dangers of mining, with 100 fatalities last year, 77% of which occurred aboveground, and 23% occurring in underground mines. Mining has become safer overall but there is room for improvement. The infographic offers a silver lining, however, in tips on keeping miners safe.
Mine Rescues and Emergencies
Throughout mining history of the U.S., the mining community has been instrumental in rescuing miners from emergency situations in coal and metal and nonmetal mines. Powerful machinery, darkened tunnels filled with debris and poisonous and explosive gases are just some of the elements contributing to mine incidents. Rescuers often must travel miles in dark underground mines to find missing miners or recover those who did not survive.
Mine Rescue Day
Each year on October 30, 2016, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) recognizes the courage of mine rescuers who risk their own lives to save other miners. Called Mine Rescue Day, it’s a day to give appreciation for the miners, mine supervisors, trainers, and safety specialists who exhibit exemplary bravery by putting their lives on the line. They rise to the occasion to help miners trapped by mine fires, explosions, roof falls, inundations of water or harmful gases, and other emergency conditions.
