GE Features its Rail Optimization Solutions for Mining at MINExpo 2012

To help the mining industry meet the challenges of taking a raw material to market, GE’s Optimization Solutions business offers a comprehensive suite of monitoring and predictive software and ondemand services. These solutions enable mining and rail freight customers to optimize outbound logistics, maximize capacity, increase asset utilization and reduce fuel expense and overall operating costs. Fully customizable to meet the transportation needs of mining companies no matter their size or requirements, Optimization Solutions helps mines enhance rail operations, assets, networks and energy use.

“GE’s commitment to the mining industry extends from mine to port,” said Geoff Knox, CEO of GE Mining. “In this economy, all mines must utilize their assets in the most efficient manner. Making the transportation of materials by rail more cost effective and productive helps our customers reach their goals in the most fundamental way.”

Industry-leading train management system

Live product demonstrations of RailConnectTM Transportation Management System, a train makeup and wagon management solution, is available at GE Mining’s Booth 7371. This leading software for transportation management supports daily operations and drives bottom-line productivity through three highly integrated modules: a transportation management system, revenue management and car hire accounting. This sophisticated software uses processing logic to block cars, distribute notifications, generate charges, calculate demurrage, and provide work orders automatically for improved information flow, increased productivity and reduced costs.

Track inventory anywhere

ShipperConnectTM Rail Supply Chain Execution System is also demonstrated at MINExpo. This system allows mine and rail operators to view rail assets and inventory in transit, manage railcar maintenance and repairs, process inventory transfers, reduce demurrage and storage charges, optimize rail fleet performance and automate rail yard tasks and workflow. ShipperConnect is customizable and can be tailored to an individual company’s needs.

“Our ShipperConnect Rail Supply Chain Execution System provides mining companies the software and solutions needed to manage rail operations, maintain asset and inventory visibility, and process and fulfill customer orders,” said Kirk Knauff, senior vice president of Marketing and Services.

“ShipperConnect Rail Yard Management System helps mining companies simplify complex rail operations, automate routine operating tasks, and manage railcar assets and inventory stockpiles.”

Optimized signaling systems

MINExpo visitors are able to compare GE’s Optimization Solutions for signaling systems such as RailEdgeTM Electronic Authority System. This system is designed for lower-volume mines, but is built so it can be upgraded to Incremental Train Control System (ITCS) as traffic density and mine capacity increase. Signaling solutions are right-sized to provide the safety assurance necessary to optimize train traffic as volumes increase while keeping field equipment to a minimum.

Better performance with ecomaginationSM

GE’s Optimization Solutions portfolio offers several products that are ecomagination qualified and bring clean and innovative solutions to mining, an industry that poses some of the most pressing environmental challenges. Ecomagination solutions help mines reduce costs while protecting the environment. Optimization Solutions products include:

  • LOCOTROLTM Distributed Power and Tower Control System makes it possible for high-capacity, heavy-haul trains to see a 12% throughput increase and 10% operating cost reduction by coordinating fuel distribution throughout the train. Testing on one representative route showed that a three-locomotive train running under a typical duty cycle required 6% to 9% less fuel to operate.
  • Trip OptimizerTM System calculates an optimal speed profile based on a train’s makeup and route to help achieve consistent handling and minimal fuel burn for on-time deliveries and expanded capacity. For each locomotive on which it is used, Trip Optimizer System can reduce fuel consumption by 3% to 17% (an incremental 32,000 gallons), cut greenhouse gas emissions by 365 tons, cut NOx emissions by five tons and decrease particulate matter emissions by 0.2 tons.
