NPK Construction Equipment, the exclusive distributor for Paus GmbH mining vehicles in the United States and Canada, is pleased to announce the delivery of the first Paus PG-10 heavy-duty mining grader to Signal Peak’s underground coal mine in Roundup Mountain, MT in October 2017. The grader was sold through NPK’s local parts and service dealer, Modern Machinery, located in Billings. Prior to shipping, two of NPK’s service technicians were at the factory in Emsbüren, Germany to oversee the final assembly and testing.
Because coal mines are inherently poorly lit, Signal Peak requested their grader be painted white instead of the typical Paus yellow. A white paint job aids light reflection and increases the visible working area. To counter reflectivity and eliminate glare, the interior of the cab was painted flat black. This was just one of many mine specific requirements NPK & Paus modified in order to provide the mine with the exact grader they wanted while staying true to the standard Paus mine-duty equipment line. It was built using a Tier3/MSHA Cummins QSB 4.5 engine (Tier4 also available) and a hydrostatic drive system.
Operators at Signal Peak have repeatedly remarked how much power the hydrostatic drive system, in conjunction with the all-wheel drive, affords the machine. The combination gives Paus’s PG10 grader elevated tractive forces that would normally only be seen with full-size, on-road graders. Operators have also noted that the center-mounted cab greatly improves visibility in comparison to the mine’s previous graders. (Cabs are available open or enclosed with air conditioning.) The photos below show the grader configured without a front blade and optional front weights in place.
