Exploring Careers in Mining: Sepro and Met-Solve Host Student Learning Day

Last week, Sepro gave a crash course on careers in the mining industry for students from School District #35 in Langley, British Columbia. Ranging from grades 10 -12, the youth who attended wanted to find out what job opportunities exist in relation to this rewarding industry. They were able to learn first-hand from a few of our mineral processing professionals during their visit to Sepro!

Sepro’s Automation Manager Trevor Elliot provided a hands-on demonstration of the Falcon SB-SFC automation package. Students learned about how equipment is controlled on-site and how the machine operation parameters are set for Sepro Gravity Concentrator AutoPACs.

The Engineering department shared their expertise during the Student Learning Day. Frank Wilms, one of Sepro’s Engineers, showed how plants and equipment need to be designed in precise detail before they are manufactured and sent to a mine site to begin operation.

Met-Solve Laboratories Inc. Technician, Robin Neale, gave a demonstration on Heavy Liquid Separation (HLS); a process designed to assist in determining an ideal dense media SG to use with a Condor Dense Media Separator. Students were then able to experiment with the HLS process in the lab to gain a better understanding of the testing method.

Sepro’s own Penny Longman (BSc(Hons), M.EDes) was responsible for coordinating the event, along with Pat Rosen, District Teacher of Career Education for the Langley School District.

Pat had this to say about the student learning visit to Sepro:

“Thanks to the many members of your team who took time out of their day to talk with our students. Students mentioned specifically the passion demonstrated by your staff members. They enjoyed hearing how a wide range of professionals contribute to a common goal. They liked the demonstrations and seeing the large equipment in operation.”

Sepro Mineral Systems Corp and Met-Solve Laboratories’ goal was to facilitate interest in the science of mining and mineral processing, while educating youth about its important role in Canada’s economical sector. Thank you to all students who participated in the student learning day at Sepro!
