Codelco awards OHL $91.2 million contract

Spanish construction company OHL has been awarded a USD 91.2 million contract from Codelco to develop a system to crush, transport, acid cure and stack copper oxides.

The system will be installed in the Ministro Hales Division, for which Codelco is planning to invest USD 2.3 billion in the next few years.

OHL will be responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of the system for 3 years.

During this period, OHL is estimated to process 22 million tons of oxide extracted by Codelco.

The Ministro Hales open mine has reserves of more than 1.3 billion tons of copper. Codelco will exploit the mine for 14 years and will produce 163,000 tons of fine copper and 264 tons of silver per year.

The useful life of the mine can be extended to 50 years if the company decides to adapt the mine for underground exploitation.
