TORONTO – March 1, 2015 – In 1890, a young mining engineer named Edmund J. Longyear set a new standard for innovation in mining. Today, the successful company that bears his name continues to do so.
The company is now known as Boart Longyear (www.BoartLongyear.com), and it will kick off its 125th anniversary celebration during PDAC 2015, March 1 to 4, at Booth #101.
Longyear, a member of the first graduating class at the Michigan Mining School, sank the first diamond drill hole on the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota. He soon formed a contract diamond drilling company to serve the rapidly growing U.S. iron ore mining and steel industry.
Still driven by the desire to help customers safely decrease costs and increase productivity, Boart Longyear has grown to become the world’s leading provider of drilling services, drilling equipment, and performance tooling for mining and drilling companies globally. It also has a substantial presence in aftermarket parts and service, energy, mine de-watering, oil sands exploration, and production drilling.
Anniversary celebrations during PDAC 2015 include:
Timeline. Boart Longyear will honor its rich history with a timeline at its booth featuring its 125 years of growth, evolution and innovation. Among the actual historic pieces featured are:
o Bit and core samples from the first-ever diamond drill hole Longyear drilled in 1890
o The Company’s first drilling services contract (1891)
o A leather flip-book that was used in the early 1900s to showcase the Company’s product line and drilling contracting services
o A prospecting rock hammer used by Longyear’s son, Robert Davis Longyear, who managed the Company from 1923 until his retirement in 1960
o The first wireline core retrieval system, the Q® Wireline System (1953), an innovation that revolutionized the diamond drilling industry by increasing productivity on the worksite
Hall of Fame. Boart Longyear will formally launch the Boart Longyear Hall of Fame and inaugurate the first inductees during a customer reception on Monday evening. It will also invite nominations of former or current employees who will be considered for future selection to the Hall of Fame for “above-and-beyond” achievements and contributions to the Company and industry.
