Aurecon launches online continuous sustainability reporting

Moving to a digital reporting format which makes it easier for stakeholders to access information, global engineering and infrastructure advisory firm Aurecon has integrated sustainability reporting into its website and will report entirely online and on a continuous basis.

Aurecon’s reporting is aligned to the principles of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 framework.

Our commitment to the GRI enables us to measure our sustainability performance against world-class standards; communicate our results through systematic reporting; and work towards improving our positive impact on the environment, society and the economy.

The GRI content index for the reporting period 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016 can be accessed here.

Sonja de Klerk, Head of Quality, Environment and Sustainability, said the future is not inevitable.

“We don’t have a crystal ball, but we know that if we don’t change course, we simply end up in the same direction in which we’re already headed. What might be too hard for one individual or one company, becomes do-able when we join forces with others. That’s why in the sustainability space, caring for our planet and our common future means sharing… resources… ideas… initiatives… and good practice. There are many organisations who care deeply and we want to work with them towards a future we can be proud of.”

“Our people are at the heart and soul of our culture of transparent operations, and are encouraged to share their stories around the environmental and social achievements of our projects and how the communities they work with are impacted. In their own words, completely unedited, our staff have been encouraged to tell it exactly how it is.

“From embedding safety in design in the Auckland City Rail Link project and engaging indigenous Australian students in engineering as a potential career through to moving beyond designing infrastructure to a road to upliftment on the Ga-Seleka roads upgrade project in Lephalale, in Limpopo and being part of the solution to keep Auckland office from chucking 17000+ coffee cups into landfill, our goal is to weave the threads of sustainability into the tapestry of every project we design. And to harness the power of storytelling and sharing the unplugged stories of our people to inspire a culture of sustainability,” added John McGuire, Chief Innovation Officer.

Aurecon’s philosophy centres on building an innovative and diverse culture around sustainable economic, social and environmental impacts. We report on, and learn from, our performance against globally recognised standards, that are often above local regulations and legislative requirements. We push our operational boundaries by innovating the possible, exploring the probable and challenging the remotely plausible.

The practical action plan designed to bring Aurecon’s sustainability philosophy to life comprises six key areas of materiality:

  1. Ethical operations
  2. Embracing difference
  3. Health & Safety
  4. Engaging stakeholders
  5. Responsible environmental footprints
  6. Creating shared value

Aurecon is a proud member of the GRI Gold community and supports the mission of the GRI to empower decision makers everywhere, through GRI sustainability reporting standards and its multi-stakeholder network, to take action towards a more sustainable economy and world.

Following the launch of the new, modular suite of GRI Standards in October 2016, we have already commenced transitioning to apply the new Standards where possible.

This is the fourth year the firm has published a sustainability report.

Feedback about our sustainability reporting is welcomed by our Head of Quality, Environment and Sustainability, Sonja de Klerk, via [email protected].
