New book ‘102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground‘ spotlights global reclamation projects
Stories of reinvented coal mining regions, regenerated communities and rebuilt ecosystems are told in a new book published this month.
As teams from all over the world get in training for the 34th International Mining Games, to be held in Cornwall from 29 March to 1 April, engineering and environmental consultancy Wardell Armstrong is lending financial support as sponsors. And the specific event the firm is backing is all about a precious metal Wardell Armstrong’s mining experts know a lot about – gold.
This year’s Games are being hosted by the University of Exeter’s Camborne School of Mines (CSM) at King Edward Mine, near Camborne – the first time the competition will be held outside the US or Australia. Forty teams from every part of the world will compete in physical challenges based on traditional mining techniques, many of which were originally developed in Cornwall in the 1700s and 1800s.
All the events in the Games rely on preparation and excellent teamwork. ‘Jackleg drilling’, ‘mucking’ and ‘track stand’ will test the competitors’ physical strength, speed and endurance, while challenges like surveying depend more on knowledge and quick thinking. The event being sponsored by Wardell Armstrong – gold panning – involves finding five flattened lead or copper ball bearings in a pan full of dirt and rock. It replicates the oldest method of mining gold and dates back to ancient Rome.

The International Mining Games started in 1978 in honour of the 91 miners who died in 1972 in the Sunshine Mine disaster, USA, as well as miners who have since died in the line of duty. Since then, it has grown and evolved to provide a talent scouting opportunity for mining and mining services companies, as well as bringing together mining students from all over the world. The event will be free and open to spectators.
