Real-time wind map goes viral

A wind map has gone viral on the web. Data visualisation specialists at hint.fm use surface weather data to generate an almost live wind map of the U.S.

“These are 1-hour forecasts, downloaded once per hour,” writes the website authors.

“So what you’re seeing is close to live data. We’d be interested in displaying data for the entire earth; if you know of a source of detailed live wind data for the entire globe, please let us know.”

The site has many mentions on Twitter, and the map also reached the front page of the social sharing site, Reddit.

The map illustrates why Texas and the Midwest are good candidates for wind farms. Texas leads the U.S. in wind power, followed by Iowa.

Wind resources along the Texas Panhandle and some mountain passes offer the greatest wind potential in the United States.
