Unlikely new port for US Coal

Strong dollar and contract benchmarks at three-year lows forcing US miners out

National Geographic News reports that Bellingham has in the past been lauded for becoming one of the few cities in the US to rely solely on solar and hydro-generated electricity, its innovative building efficiency program, and the “buy local” ethos of its bustling farmers’ markets.

But the US coal industry now has its eye on this small coastal city 32 kilometers south of the Canadian border with plans underway for a $500 million new coal terminal.
