Stillwater evacuates mine

Stillwater Mining (NYSE:SWC), the only platinum and palladium miner in the United States, evacuated about 200 workers from its underground mine in Montana yesterday.

The Billings Gazette reports:

“We’re not saying fire at this time. There was smoke discovered around 9:30 a.m., and the mine had to be evacuated,” said Amy Louviere, public information officer at the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration near Washington, D.C.

An MSHA investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause of the incident.
