Enhancing Mining Efficiency and Sustainability with the Metso Reactorwell™ upgrade
In the mining industry, maximizing operational efficiency and minimizing environmental impact are top priorities. The Metso Reactorwell upgrade has emerged as a game-changing solution, revolutionizing the performance of thickeners and clarifiers while simultaneously minimizing the environmental footprint.
With its innovative design and advanced technology, the Reactorwell upgrade offers significant benefits that enhance both the efficiency and sustainability of mining processes.
Efficient tailings management
Tailings management is a critical aspect of mining operations, and the Metso Reactorwell upgrade plays a vital role in improving its efficiency. The Reactorwell upgrade optimizes the thickening process by utilizing a combination of mechanical and chemical treatment, which accelerates the settling of solids and improves the separation of water.
This results in faster and more effective dewatering of tailings, reducing the volume of slurry that needs to be stored and transported. By increasing the solids concentration and minimizing water content, the Reactorwell helps mining companies optimize their tailings storage facilities, saving space and reducing costs.
Additionally, the Reactorwell upgrade has shown these benefits while also reducing the amount of flocculant addition required. In most feedwell designs the flocculant is not evenly mixed with the incoming feed slurry or if it is mixed well the high shear zones break the floccules which limit their effectiveness. Both conditions necessitate an increase in flocculant addition. The patented design of the Metso Reactorwell rapidly mixes the flocculant into the feed, facilitates the growth of large floccules, and gently distributes them evenly into the thickener resulting in highly efficient thickener feed preparation.
Environmental sustainability
Mining operations have a significant environmental footprint, particularly concerning water usage and tailings disposal. The Metso Reactorwell addresses these concerns by promoting sustainability and minimizing environmental impact. By optimizing the thickening process, the Reactorwell reduces the amount of water lost to the tailings storage facility.
This water recovery not only conserves a valuable resource but also reduces the dependency on freshwater sources. By increasing the density of the tailings being deposited, the Reactorwell upgrade enables an increase in beach angle and reduces the frequency of lifts to the tailings dam height.
Versatility and compatibility
The Metso Reactorwell upgrade’s design allows it to be integrated into existing mining operations seamlessly. It is compatible with most makes of thickeners, making it easier for mining companies to upgrade their existing infrastructure without major modifications.
The Reactorwell upgrade’s modular design ensures flexibility and adaptability to different processing conditions, enabling it to handle a wide range of process conditions. This versatility makes it a valuable asset for mining operations of varying scales and across different mineral sectors.
Data-driven insights and support
The Reactorwell upgrade capabilities extend beyond its physical attributes. Metso offers advanced data-driven solutions, such as Performance Centers, which enable mining companies to monitor and optimize their thickener operations in real-time.
Metso’s Performance Centers provide valuable insights and recommendations based on data analysis, enabling operators to make informed decisions to maximize efficiency and minimize operational costs. With three levels of support, ranging from remote monitoring to on-site expertise, Metso Performance Centers ensure that mining operations have access to the necessary resources for continuous improvement and operational excellence.
The Metso Reactorwell upgrade represents a significant advancement in tailings and wastewater management within the mining industry. By enhancing operational efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and promoting sustainability, the Reactorwell upgrade addresses critical challenges faced by mining operations. Its versatility and compatibility enable seamless integration, while data-driven insights and support ensure continuous improvement.
As mining companies strive for more sustainable and efficient operations, the Metso Reactorwell upgrade serves as a valuable tool in achieving those goals, ultimately contributing to a more responsible and environmentally conscious mining industry.

What’s the difference from an UltraSPARC. The underfloor density range. What mode of transportation of the underfloor.
Metso
Thanks for your query – we are not familiar with “UltraSPARC”; however, we understand you may be referring to rake-less thickener designs. Metso thickeners are all raked designs. Raking assists with material transport out of the thickener. Rakes are also important in the dewatering process as they apply shear to the settled flocculated material. This shear further release water and maximizes the solids concentration of the underflow. There is a large variation in underflow densities that can be achieved in different thickener applications – this will vary depending upon the application and other properties of the feed material (such as particle size) – as well as the style of thickener selected. We would be happy to further discuss your application.
