SGS Canada Inc. expanding and creating jobs and investment in Lakefield

SGS Canada Inc. received approval today to expand their Lakefield facilities with the construction of a new 41,000 square foot lab facility. Council for the Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield approved the site plan agreement at their March 13th meeting. This allows the company to proceed with their growth plans.

Gerard O’Dell, the Managing Director from SGS Canada Inc. said “We are pleased to announce this 41,000 square foot expansion of our Lakefield site. The construction includes a multimillion dollar contract involving Kawartha Capital Corp. and utilizes the services of many local sub-contractors. It is the most recent of a long line of investments that SGS has continued to make over many years at Lakefield. Our business at Lakefield is known internationally as a key repository of metallurgical, geochemical and environmental expertise and thus a critical part of our 2014 Growth Plan. With this expansion, we are happy to say that we anticipate hiring at least 60 new staff, professionals that will continue to provide the high level of expertise that is associated with the Lakefield site”.

“The Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield is extremely proud to have a company of the size and scope of SGS in our community” stated Mary Smith, Reeve of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield. “It is extremely encouraging that the company is planning a major expansion which will bring new employees and investment to our wonderful community. The township council supports and encourages this type of growth and development.”

“An expansion of this caliber results in infrastructure investment and specifically, the Lakefield expansion will result in the creation of least 60 medium-to-high scale jobs. This shows confidence in our region and reinforces our position in the marketplace as an attractive community for business location” said Dan Taylor, President & CEO of the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPA EDC). “We’re working hard to create an environment which encourages growth and job creation in knowledge-based, innovative and creative industries. This is a perfect example of the type of growth this region is best situated for. We look forward to continuing to work with the staff at SGS to recruit workers to support this expansion.”

Peterborough County Warden, J. Murray Jones said, “This expansion will have a regional impact with benefits to many of our communities. Peterborough County is well-positioned for growth. Proximity to the GTA, our mix of rural and urban living and a wide range of recreational and natural amenities make our region attractive to many companies. We welcome this expansion and will continue to support the efforts of SGS as they continue to develop in Lakefield.”
