Rio Tinto names Shell’s Katie Jackson as new copper chief
Jackson, who is the current president of National Grid Ventures, an energy group, joins Rio Tinto on September 1.
Rock band Manic Street Preachers are playing a central role to mark the centenary of the Senghenydd, Wales coal mining disaster of October 14th, 1913.
The pit blast is the UK’s worst, having taken the lives of 439 miners.
The Manic Street Preachers have donated to Wales’ new national mining memorial, the unveiling of which next month will coincide with the Senghenydd commemoration. They band is also creating a soundtrack for a dance performance that will take place in the town’s streets, the BBC reports.
The memorial will also celebrate the lives lost in 150 other mining disasters over the course of the past 100 years.
“Having grown up in mining communities, we know only too well the devastating impact that mining disasters have had in towns and villages across Wales over the years…we are only too happy to support this worthy cause.” said Nicky Wire of the band.
