Limits creates potential supply risks to utilities operating American reactors that generate almost a fifth of the country’s electricity.
Rio Tinto’s chief executive Tom Albanese said on Saturday that he would lobby Canada to ensure it was the operator of the Roughrider uranium project in Saskatchewan, despite legal hurdles, after its successful takeover of Hathor. At the start of December, Rio emerged the winner after beating out world number one uranium miner, Canada’s Cameco, with a $643 million bid for the explorer.
Reuters reports current Canadian law restricts foreign companies to a 49% stake of an operating uranium mine. There have been suggestions Rio Tinto would need to find a domestic partner before it could start up the Roughrider project in Saskatchewan’s uranium-rich Athabasca basin.
