Rio Tinto halts operations at two Australian iron ore mines after death

World no. two iron ore producer Rio Tinto announced on Wednesday it is suspending operations at two mines in Pilbara, Western Australia following the fatality of a worker.

“Operations at Brockman 2 and the adjacent Nammuldi mine site will remain suspended until further notice,” the company said in a statement. The 27-year old man was fatally injured shortly after 8:00pm while changing out a hydraulic cylinder on a front-end loader. One other work-mate was with him at the time.

Incident management teams, both on site and in Perth, have been formed. The Rio Tinto investigation team is being mobilised and will arrive on site later this week.

Rio Tinto President, Pilbara Operations, Greg Lilleyman said the incident would be thoroughly investigated. “This is a tragic reminder of the importance of working safely. There should be no higher priority than this, and we cannot accept that accidents in the workplace are inevitable or acceptable.”

Reuters reports the two mines account for about 6% of Rio Tinto’s total production of iron ore.
