South African mining deaths rise as safety worsens, lobby says
The number of deaths in the world’s top platinum-group metals miner rose to 55 between January and Oct. 28 this year, from 43 in the same period last year.
The upgrade is expected to increase average annual gold production at the Ghana mine by between 75,000 and 100,000 ounces for the first five years, starting in 2020.
The southern African nation sees the mining sector as the main driver for reviving an economy crippled by triple-digit inflation and high unemployment.
