Northwest Community College in Smithers is preparing students for jobs in the mining industry, and boasts a high success rate, especially amongst local First Nations, reports Opinion 250 News. Their Workforce Exploration Skills Training program focusses on hand-on training, with students spending seven weeks at a mining training camp outside of Smithers.
The hands-on experience and classroom instruction includes: drill core technician training and cultural resource assessment; prospector basic training; training as a mining exploration field assistant; and industry-related safety certification. WEST has seen 80-percent of its graduates move on to jobs. About three-quarters of program participants are Aboriginal.

Agnico-Eagles Mines Ltd. flew the group to Greenland following a two-day tour of the company’s gold mine in Kittilä, Finland, where the Nunavut visitors met numerous highly educated Finns who have landed good jobs in mining.

Ivanhoe Mines announced its financial results for the year ended December 31, 2010. The approved 2011 capital budget for Oyu Tolgoi is estimated at $2.3 billion. Principal components of the 2011 construction program include $561 million for the 100,000-tonne-per-day concentrator complex; $186 million for the initial mining fleet and to start pre-stripping of the Southern Oyu open-pit mine; and $713 million for project infrastructure, electrical power and completion of the process-water supply. The number of workers assigned to the Oyu Tolgoi site recently surpassed 7,000 for the first time. On-site jobs at Oyu Tolgoi are expected to peak at almost 14,000 in mid-2011, with an additional 3,700 Mongolians receiving skills training sponsored by Oyu Tolgoi.
A training centre for unemployed people in north-west Queensland is pushing for mining and liquefied natural gas (LNG) companies to give its trainees jobs, rather than sourcing overseas labour.
The Myuma centre in Camooweal, north-west of Mount Isa, is training 30 people in roadworks, hospitality and administration industries.
Spokesman Colin Saltmere says it is negotiating with several resources companies to employ its graduates.
"The LNG [industry] need a lot, a lot of, a lot of, a lot of people and you need to be aligned with that sort of stuff," he said.
CB Online says Quantum Rare Earth Developments has reported discovering a large niobium deposit in southeast Nebraska. The underground carbonatite formation has potential to become one of the world's largest sources of niobium, used in high-production steel and superalloys.
