A leading mining professor says the future of Australian mining could be in jeopardy if companies don't get serious about their safety records, Australian Mining reported: Professor Peter Lilly, Executive Director of Minerals and Energy Strategy at Curtin University, told the Mining & Engineering WA conference that the unless the mining industry ensures it can have zero fatalities, mining will no longer be a possibility in Australia.

Drilling to start inside moors national park for new UK potash mine

The Yorkshire Post reports Sirius Minerals has started a concept study at its York Potash project, paving the way for mining to begin at the UK’s only seam of potash. Sirius has secured mineral rights for 631 sq km of land between Whitby and Scarborough with plans to open a new potash mine and create up to 5,000 jobs. Sirius is about to start drilling two temporary boreholes in the North York Moors National Park. Once it gets an idea of what the potash seam looks like under the ground it can plan where to site the mine.

BHP gets approval for potash mine: NineMSN Finance

BHP said in a statement overnight that the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment had notified it of the approval, following an environmental impact statement submitted in December, 2010. BHP said Jansen would employ an average of 1,900 people during construction and create approximately 1,000 operational jobs once the mine has reached full capacity.

But many years unfold exactly as this one has, with a good rally continuing from the end of the previous year into the spring, hesitation, a pullback in the June Swoon, and a rally going into July 4th. Oil sands attract 5,000 people a month to Alberta

Perth training centre designed to ease skills shortage in the mining industry

7 News reports that a new, multi-million dollar training facility in Perth will help to address the Australian mining industry's skill shortage by shifting focus away from skilled migration and towards training.

[Minister for Workplace Relations, Chris] Evans says the $3.2 million centre will provide students with the skills needed to make a direct transition into the work force. "We don't want to focus on migration alone, we want to focus on getting young West Australians, and Australian kids more generally, chances to work in high-skilled, high-paid jobs," Senator Evans said.
