Vale Inco is shutting down its nickel mining and processing operations in Sudbury, Ont., for eight weeks starting June 1 due to weak demand for the metal used to make stainless steel, the company said Thursday.
The world’s largest producer of iron ore, Vale, plans to invest US$250 million to restart the Moatize coal mine in Mozambique. Vale has been the concession holder on coal mining in Moatize since 2004, when it paid over US$123 million for the license. The company expects coal production to begin in 2010 and 2011. The reserves are estimated at 2.4 billion tons of coal, making the Moatize mine the largest in the country.

Mining Journal (May 13, 2008) - Cia Vale do Rio Doce (Vale), the world`s biggest iron ore producer, is due to invest US$4.4 billion this year to expand its iron ore business and boost output by 50% by 2013, the company said.
For the fourth year in a row, a Vale Inco mining operation has been recognized as the safest in Canada.
Teck is seen as a logical merger partner in particular for Anglo American or Vale SA’s base-metals business.
Commercial production is scheduled for September, the company said.
Revenue from auctions was down 17% to $121 million for the first six months of 2024, from $145 million a year earlier.
