A BBC poll enquiring about the public's appetite for nuclear power has delivered some surprising results. The poll by GlobeScan, commissioned for the BBC, asked 23,231 people in 23 countries with nuclear programs their opinions on nuclear power. It found that most are significantly more opposed to nuclear power than they were in 2005, with just 22% agreeing that "nuclear power is relatively safe and an important source of electricity, and we should build more nuclear power plants."

London-listed base minerals explorer EMED Mining (LON:EMED) enjoyed a 6.5% bump in its share price Wednesday on news that the government of Andalucia is supporting a restart of its Rio Tinto copper mine. The mine has no connection to the Anglo-Australian mining giant of the same name. EMED said "the Junta de Andalucia has made clear public policy statements committing support for the company’s plans to restart the Rio Tinto Mine as soon as possible, the most recent such statement being in Minas de Rio Tinto last week by the Minister for Economy in Andalucia."
Bloomberg reports AngloGold Ashanti, the third- largest producer of the metal, is scaling back a $3 billion, 10-year programme to extend is Mponeng mine outside Johannesburg, South Africa. Mponeng is the world's deepest mine and extends about 4 km (2.5 miles) underground. To meet an output target of 5.5 million ounces of gold by 2015, AngloGold will speed up expansion outside its South African base where barring technological breakthroughs, gold reserves are too deep to be mined profitably and safely. South African gold miners have to contend with some of the highest cash costs in the industry which at some properties are almost double the global average of $620 per ounce. AngloGold's most recent quarterlies showed production at Mponeng declined 8% to 117,000 ounces at $587/ounce.
Anglo American has announced the delivery of the first copper production on schedule from its Los Bronces expansion project in central Chile, visited by IM Editor Paul Moore on November 22. The expansion is expected to more than double (on average over the first three years of full production), the mine's existing production of 220,000 t/y and is the second of Anglo's four major strategic growth projects to begin production in 2011.

Aecon Group's Lockerbie and Hole Eastern Division has signed a letter of intent with the Potash Corp of Saskatchewan for a project valued at over C$250 million to install the interior of a new process mill at the mine site near Rocanville. The scope of work for the project includes the installation of all utilities and equipment for the new mill, including the process piping, electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, HVAC, and all processing equipment in the mill, where potash ore from the nearby mine will be processed.
The arrival of four tiger cubs in Tadoba – one of the country's oldest national parks – has brought cheers to wildlife lovers. However, rampant coal mining in Chandrapur and its surrounding areas pose a grave threat to tiger conservation and protection reports Hindustan Times. The Indian government has allotted more than six new coal mines in the periphery of Tadoba tiger reserve where already half a dozen coal mines are operating. Tadoba tiger reserve was in the news recently for better big cat conservation and birth of 32 tiger cubs in the area since January 2010. India's tiger population has dwindled from tens of thousands a century ago to a mere 1,411 according to the last census conducted in 2008.
