Hedge funds slash bullish wagers on gold over Trump election win
Hedge funds and other large speculators boosted net-long positions by 11% to 197,362 as of Nov. 12, the lowest in 14 weeks.
Nearly eleven percent of Australian minerals sector professionals, including engineers and geoscientists, are unemployed, according to an employment survey of almost 3000 individuals by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
The figure is up from just 2% only 12 months ago, exposing the extreme damage of the mining sector downturn.
The survey also shows that nearly 10% of those with employment feel that they are underemployed.
The results of the student participants were interesting. Despite 96% of students currently looking for post-graduate employment saying that there are limited available opportunities, 57.3% of all surveyed students remained confident that they would find work upon graduation (eventually, I suppose).

Its very bad. I used to be employed by Rio Tinto at the Ranger Uranium Mine and have not been able to get a job back in the mining industry since October last year. One year on and I cant still get back into mining as a project civil-structural-environmental engineer. The downturn is much bigger than the way its pictured, I have lots of mates who have been made redundant from multiple mine sites across Australia.

Ooo the figures for PNG are wrong! Many mining professionals in PNG have been laid off, both expatriate and national.

Remember that this is a survey.

When salaries come down jobs will appear again.25 year olds want 200 grand a year. Unrealistic these days.

Some contributing factors, much of the detailed design work for these mines (especially the big greenfield iron ore and coal mines) has been outsourced to Asia.
There has also been a lot of 457’s in recent years and when these people have no work are they being made to leave Australia because of the downturn or are they just adding to un-employed numbers?

Nothing happening here in Africa either ….. except lay – offs after layoffs …and many future projects canned

Well I’m having extreme difficulties finding a job as a heavy duty mechanical fitter. I see Gina Rinehart wants to import 1200 foreign workers for the Roy Hill project. I think its about time the foreigners on the 457 ” TEMPORARY VISAS ” went home.

Mining jobs are in abundance in Canada. I know personally of the situation in Fort McMurray, Alberta where because of the severe labor shortage, many mining projects have been cancelled.
