Nuclear energy to grow fourteen fold in India

India’s Power Minister says that nuclear power will add 63,000 MW of capacity, a fourteen fold increase, to his country over the next 20 years.

Sushilkumar Shinde made the comments on Wednesday while addressing the India International Nuclear Symposium.

After China, India has the second fastest growing nuclear industry. Six reactors are being built, 17 are planned and another 40 are proposed.

India faces chronic energy shortages while the country struggles to develop its economy. BP is bullish on nuclear energy’s future in non-OECD countries.

India is also looking at uranium alternatives and is developing nuclear plants that run on thorium..
