New Prince Rupert BC potash terminal edges closer

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency announced on Monday it is conducting a comprehensive study, which is a type of environmental assessment, for the proposed Canpotex Potash Terminal Project located on Ridley Island, in the Port of Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

At this time, the comprehensive study is in its early stages. The Agency invites the public to comment on the project and the conduct of the comprehensive study.

The Agency has provided a background document that contains information on the proposed project, the federal requirements of a comprehensive study, and the proposed environmental components to be considered in the review of the project.

The background document and more information on this project are available on the Agency’s website at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca , in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry under reference number 09-03-47632. Paper copies of the document are also available by request.

The Agency is also making available $50,000 under its participant funding program to assist groups and individuals to take part in upcoming steps in the federal environmental assessment of this project.

Public comments and funding applications received by September 30, 2011 will be considered.

This is the first of three public participation periods that will occur during the federal environmental assessment of the project. Future public participation opportunities will be announced at a later date.

Canpotex Terminals Limited and the Prince Rupert Port Authority are proposing to develop and operate a potash export terminal and a rail, road and utilities loop corridor on Ridley Island in the Port of Prince Rupert, in British Columbia.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.

Site clearing is projected for February or March of 2012 with construction starting in spring 2013 and ending in the first quarter of 2016.

Canpotex markets and distributes Saskatchewan potash to customers overseas, principally to countries in Asia, Latin America, and Oceania. Operating since 1972, Canpotex has corporate offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Saskatoon, and Vancouver.

The company’s potash sales are normally in the range of 8-9 million metric tons a year. Major international markets include Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and Malaysia.
