Solar, EVs and a big exit from coal: 2024’s good climate news
Solar capacity around the world was rolled out at a record pace, as bargain panel prices helped countries deploy cleaner energy.
US president Barack Obama has started airing a new ad in the swing state Ohio that attacks presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s stance on coal. Yes, you heard right.
The ad start by touting Obama support for the clean coal industry specifically in Ohio where coal production has increased 7% since Obama took office.
“Obama’s also made one of America’s largest investments ever in clean coal technology, a $5 billion effort to create the next generation of coal-fired plants,” the ad goes on and then quotes from a 2003 speech Mitt Romney made at the Salem Massachusetts coal plant where he said “I will not create jobs that kill people, and that plant kills people!”

Clearly Mitt Romney was talking about one plant with compliance problems. How do you stretch that comment to the headline that Romney says coal kills people? That is desperate politics, but typical of the Chicago style of politics surrounding the BHO re-election effort. BHO and Biden have spoken out against coal and fossil fuel industry on many occasions, saying they would regulate it out of existence. They are achieving their goal against coal. Even the UMWA have witheld their endorsement from Obama.
Just trying to make it
I am just a average man trying to take care of my family that’s all. I have never asked for government support. I have always just worked harder for my family when things get rough but now there is no jobs they all have been taken. All I want is a way to take care of my family that’s all. Coal may have had some. Asualties but here in Harlan county Kentucky that is all there is so unless the government can replace the jobs they have taken a lot of families will suffer. All I can say is thanks for taking away my job and making me lose everything.
