Murder investigation sends Aussie police down abandoned mine shaft

New South Wales police divers haveĀ searched an abandoned mine shaft near Bathurst for the remains of a man allegedly murdered in 2009.

Andrew Russell, 23, disappeared from Bathurst on June 2, 2009.

The police searched a different mine near the village of Sofala on Friday and checked a nearby waste management site for the young man’s remains.

“Our investigators have worked tirelessly to determine exactly what happened to Mr Russell and while we have laid charges the search for his remains continues,” said Police Inspector Mark Wall.

Two young men, 25 and 26, are currently being tried in connection to Russell’s death.
