Mob attacks Indian police as they try to stop illegal mining

Twelve Indian police officers were injured trying to shut down an illegal mining operation in Jodia, Rajasthan, India.

When a police team began confiscating mining equipment in Jodia, villagers started throwing stones.  Police allegedly tried to reason with the villagers but the attacks continued as the angry mob encircled the team.

Teargas shells also proved unsuccessful in deterring the attackers. The stone assault finally ended when police fired 20 rounds of bullets into the air.

Many of the assailants are considered to be directly involved in an illegal mining ‘mafia.’   Five men have been arrested and more than 100 others will be investigated.
