Mining seminar to focus on minerals-based industrialisation
Adviser to the Mineral Resources Minister and chairman of Bigen Africa, Dr Iraj Abedian and General Manager of business development at Mintek, Peter Craven, will bring a fresh angle to the debate on mining in SA when they give a talks on 19 June about how minerals in South Africa can best be exploited to benefit the country.
The seminar is one of a series of four hosted by Mining for Change in association with Motjoli Resources and AngloGold Ashanti, that take place at Summer Place in Hyde Park.
The purpose of the seminars is to provide a platform for all the stakeholders in the industry to seek out common ground and focus on improving the industry and its role in SA. The seminars seek to tackle major issues affecting the mining industry ahead of and immediately following the ANC’s policy conference in June.
“If a country is as richly endowed as South Africa is with natural resources”, it is often asked, “does it not follow that it should derive at least part of its economic growth through downstream and upstream industrialisation based on these natural resources?”
The June 19 seminar on Minerals based industrialisation (beneficiation, mining input industries, enterprise development and procurement) will offer unique insights into how industrialisation can best be put to use in an effort to gain maximum rewards in all sectors from mining.
All the issues pertaining to this complicated subject will be tackled, including the many opportunities that the mining industry creates, as well as the obstacles and how they can be overcome.
The other seminars are:
25 June: Dr Mzukisi Qobo and Mr Paul Jordaan – State participation in the mining industry (Tax, royalty, state mining company, indigenisation and nationalisation).
3 July: Mr. Mark Cutifani and Mr. Abiel Mngomezulu – The future (strategic minerals, minerals commission, exploration, super ministry).
Seminar attendance is free. To book one of the limited seats email rsvp@miningforchange.co.za.
