Illegal gold mining forces Ghana to close water treatment plant
Surging gold prices have spurred an illicit rush in Africa’s biggest producer of the metal.
A blasting incident on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Gold One International’s Cooke 4 Operation on the West Rand of Johannesburg fatally injured a worker.
Blasting operations have been suspended. Cooke 4 Operations are being investigated by the South African Department of Mineral Resources.
The Cooke 1, 2 and 3 underground operations were acquired by Gold One International in 2012. The Cooke surface assets (Randfontein Surface Operations) are located in the West Rand, 30 kilometres from Johannesburg.
Gold One International Limited is a dual listed (ASX/JSE: GDO) mid-tier mining group with gold operations and gold and uranium prospects across Southern Africa.
