Accidents claim three lives at South African platinum mines

Three miners have died in two separate incidents at platinum mines in South Africa.

An employee was struck and killed at the Bokoni Platinum Mines on Friday. The mine operator, Anooraq Resources (CVE:ARQ), said in a statement that the employee died after being struck by a dump truck in the mine’s main shaft.

Two employees also died Friday at the Impala Rustenburg mine run by Impala Platinum (Implats) (JSE:IMP). Implats said in a statement that the two men were killed when ground fell at the mine’s 7 Shaft.

Operations at the Bokoni mine were stopped temporarily on Saturday. The South African Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) is conducting an investigation into the incident. Implats said it has suspended operations at Impala Rustenburg to undertake a safety review.
